Contests: Getting Published, Earning Money, More Venues

We have just launched a new site for unpublished authors called bookhabit.com. It allows writers to upload their work and get paid for downloads. We are also running an international competition for unpublished writers. Enter the 2008 Unpublished Writers Competition at here.

The 2008 Great Blue Heron Writing Workshop (July 1-5) at St. Francis Xavier University invites mid-level writers to engage in small-group sessions in one of four categories: fiction, playwriting, poetry, or magazine writing and creative non-fiction. This workshop offers a supportive atmosphere in which participants learn from established writers.
  • Daniel MacIvor - Playwriting
  • Bob Bancroft - Magazine Writing & Creative Non-Fiction
  • Anne Compton - Poetry
  • Michael Crummey - Fiction
  • Madeleine Thien - Fiction

Creative Nonfiction is looking for new work about Pittsburgh--the city, its people, its potential--for a project in celebration of the city's 250th anniversary. Pittsburgh in Words will feature 20 classic essays and 5 new pieces to be published online and in print this fall; there will also be a launch event on October 2 in connection with the 412 Festival.

The deadline, March 15, is coming up quickly, but we're looking only for an abstract (summary, overview, outline of what you plan to write about) and a writing sample (published or unpublished, about Pittsburgh or not), plus a cover letter with complete contact information.

Submissions may be sent by email or hard copy. Hard copies may be mailed
