My short story, "Shadow and Light," made it through the first round of the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge. The writing contest has 3 elimination rounds. Writers are placed randomly in heats and assigned a genre, subject, and character assignment.

In each round, the time frame and word count are reduced (8 days/2500 words, 3 days/2000 words, 24-hours/1500 words). Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission.

My prompts in round #1 were drama, a business trip, and a biologist. SYNOPSIS - A miracle drug might help Ellie Parks retrieve the memories that age and Alzheimer's Disease are stealing from her. But, some memories are better left forgotten.

They also have flash fiction, screenwriting, and short screenplay challenges. If anyone is interested, you can find out more about upcoming challenges here.

I got news that my prose poem, "Telling It Slant," will be published in May by a journal who nominated my work, a different prose poem, for a Pushcart Prize in 2018.

This publication also takes previously published work so the prose poem I sent them a week ago (or thereabouts) was itself nominated for a Pushcart in 2007 or 2008 (or thereabouts) by another journal.

This prose poem will now be re-published by this different publisher in the May issue. I love the 2-fer-1 sales. Seriously, I'm always surprised and so honored when an editor chooses my work as work that stands out-- as work the editor wants to call attention to. Now I'm eagerly looking forward to my prose poem being published again this May.

I also got word that my previously published 1800-word essay will be republished and online soon (it's never been online). It is an essay on writing short-shorts using well-known myths and it was previously published in Field Guide of Writing Flash Fiction: Tips from Editors, Teachers, and Writers in the Field (2009).

That felt great knowing another editor wants to run the article. And what is especially nice too is when I contacted the original publishers to be sure I need nothing more to let the other editor re-publish my essay, they promised to help promote it at their publisher's site. The publishing world truly can be a great group of people.

More on both pieces when they're released. I'm too excited to wait until it's all up and viewable to tell you about it.

A few books I've translated have come out the past six months, "The Midnight Witness" and "Her Father's Secret," by Sara Blaedel, published by Grand Central Press, and "Songbird," by Inger Wolfe, published by People's Press.

And, three new poems by Mette Moestrup I translated were read by Mette at the Stockholm International Poetry Festival last December.
