Huck Finn as Alternate History
The Washington Post weighs in on the Ten Best Books of 2007 here, with the tops in fiction going to Finn, by Jon Clinch (Random House) -- "In this masterful debut by a major new voice in fiction, Jon Clinch takes us on a journey into the history and heart of one of America's most brutal and mysterious figures: Huckleberry Finn's father."
I think it would be an interesting book to read and consider even though I'm not the sort to delve into alternate history -- "how the future might be altered had some particular event turned out differently (what if the Confederates had won at Gettysburg, or the Enola Gay had crashed before making its fateful flight?) ... "
For those interested in nonfiction the best of 2007 according to the Post is Edith Wharton, by Hermione Lee (Knopf) -- "The definitive biography of one of America’s greatest writers, from the author of the acclaimed masterpiece Virginia Woolf."
