IWW Members Published and in Print
Every week, another crop of successes for members of the Internet Writing Workshop! It's amazing!
Barry Basden
My review of Combat Reporter: Don Whitehead's World War II Diary
and Memoirs is in the Spring 2008 issue of On Point: The Journal of
Army History.
Thanks to everyone on the nonfiction list who critiqued the review for
me last year. I hope it helps sell a few extra copies of this great book.

I have another restaurant review up at Valley Scene Magazine. This
article is a second review of "The Station Restaurant" to another local
paper, and it's running now, last time I checked.
Goes to show that sometimes even a restaurant review can be recycled
if one takes another tack or approach to the subject. The first time I
reviewed The Station I did an inventory of the dishes I tried. This time
I emphasized the spring holidays and the need for a family gathering
place. And I also quoted the owner asserting that he will make whatever
dish a customer requests. I believe him. He makes wonderful things for
us every time we go to his restaurant. Nice Pinot Noir also...El Campo
winery.
I try to eat less at home, and save my extras for the restaurants I need
to review. It's a challenge.

Hey folks, I am super excited to announce that three stories of mine have been
accepted for the May 2008 issue of Pen Pricks! These short-shorts will be my
first fiction publications ever in my short writing career, and after being fully
prepared for the unfortunate event of rejections, I was more than happy to
wake up to an acceptance email in my inbox! Woohoo!
There are also some talented writers from the workshop that are featured and
will be featured in upcoming issues.
Ann Hite
My local library system contacted me yesterday and asked if I would consider
conducting a writing workshop for the pre-teens and teens this summer.
I was blown away. I did accept, even though these will be the toughest critics
I'll ever encounter. I look forward to giving back. I remember how much I
depended on writing when I was a teenager. It saved my life. Imagine if I
could have spent some time with a real writer :).
They also showed interest in beginning an adult seminar in the spring.

I'm so pleased that two of my poems, "As I Lay Dying" and "Eliza
Johnson's Letter to Martha, May 1865", are up at The Dead Mule. Many
thanks to all on the Poetrylist for providing critiques and helping me shape
them into their final forms. If you'd It's Poetry Month and they've a great
line-up, culminating in a group of poems byVirginia's Poet Laureate,
Carolyn Kreiter.

Congratulations to Joanna M Weston and Alice Folkart for their poems
published at 7 Beats
My poem 'Apricots' is in 7 Beats, too.
7 Beats has also published a long poem by Rudolfo Anaya: "Walt
Whitman Strides the Llano of New Mexico."

I just found out that my poems "Sing Down the Sun" and "Missing Thread"
have been accepted for the spring edition of The Allegheny Review. It will
be out this May. These poeems are extra special to me because they are
for my Grandpa and Grandma Hart. They both encouaged my writing. I
hope the poems would have made them proud. The Allegheny Review is
a national magazine dedicated to undergraduate literature.
Much thanks to all of you for your encouagement! :)

A piece I submitted to The Literary Cottage, about my husband adopting
my two boys, has been selected as a finalist for the "My Dad is a Hero"
series at Literary Cottage!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAHOO!!!!!
There are 53 finalists and 50 will be published (and be payed). I'm crossing
my fingers, toes, eyes and anything else I can find that I'll be among those
that get published. The issue should be out in time for Father's Day next
year!!!
And my review of the The Commoner, by John Burnham Schwartz, is up at
The Internet Review of Books. Once again, Carter and crew have
published a superb issue of reviews!
Finally, I contacted the publicist for one of my favorite authors, Martin
Clark, to request a copy of his upcoming book, The Legal Limit, to review for
IRB in August. Not only did she send me a galley copy, but she has scheduled
an in-person interview with the author on July 10th!

I received galley copies of Tomato Girl yesterday and posted front and back
cover photos on my blog. I'm really happy with the cover, description, etc.
Here's the url for anyone who'd like to take a look.

My story, "One Week," won Second Place in Flash Me Magazine's Flash for
Cash contest. What's more, an hour or so after I acknowledged their email,
I received another from PayPal with my $50 prize. Now that's efficiency.
I hope Julie doesn't mind me shouting, "Me, too," but an essay I wrote for
the Father as Hero anthology has also been selected as a finalist for the book.
As she said, 53 essays have been chosen for 50 slots so our collective twenty
fingers are crossed, although this makes typing difficult. If the essay is
selected, it'll move me $100 closer to my first million. Of course, I won't be
paid until the book is published in spring 2009, so it'll probably pay for a
tankful of gas if I'm lucky.
Incidentally, my essay on Teacher as Hero is in the anthology that was
published April 1 and available at Amazon. Details of the series, which also
includes a Mother as Hero book, (they didn't accept my submission, so I'm
not plugging that one), can be found at Literary Cottage. If the books sell,
the editor says, there are plans for additional Hero anthologies.

A few weeks ago I told you about being a finalist in chapter five of the
Readers Write a Novel Contest in the LA Times. Well columnist Steve
Lopez just called to tell me that I WON for chapter 20. The chapter
appears in tomorrow's (Friday's) Times and is also available on line. All
28 chapter winners are invited to read our winning chapters at the Los
Angeles Festival of Books at UCLA on Saturday, April 26. Westwood,
here I come!
Joanna M. Weston
Just for the record, and way late, I've a story, "Placement of Roses," in
the Winter issue of Skyline Magazine, a print journal.
My poem "Wind in Branches" is up at at 7 Beats - with a gorgeous photo.
