All about Words

Writers love words.

And, if you write and love words, you need a subscription to the weekly email newsletter published in Great Britain, Michael Quinion's WORLDWIDEWORDS.

The newsletter is erudite, informative, and free. Quinion normally features a topical word of the week -- something unusual in print -- weird words, recently noted use or misuse of words, a question and answer, feedback, notes, and comments, and a feature called Sic!

In Sic! you'll find abuse of the language in the news and elsewhere ...

Elizabeth Cowan reports that last Saturday's Ottawa Citizen ran a story on a traffic accident involving a local sports celebrity, who "got out of the car donning sunglasses and a fresh white suit." Ms Cowan hopes that was the newspaper's error.

You will find a mechanism for subscribing to the newsletter on Quinion's site. Note that Quinion is presently on vacation, and the news letter will resume in August. You can, however, get a taste of his fare at the WORLDWIDEWORDS archive.

You are so right!

I've read Quinion for years, and always found his site fascinating. He's great on etymologies of words and sayings.
