Prairie Schooner Literary Magazine

Long-time IWW member and essayist Karna Converse sent me a note saying ...

I just read in a University of Nebraska publication (I'm an alum) that Prairie Schooner will become a paying market. I can't find the article online but here's the gist of it:

Prairie Schooner received a $300,000 gift from a man in California who was a longime subscriber. Hilda Raz, Prairie Schooner's editor sai the gift fulfills the magazines' longime desire to pay its contributors.

I don't see that the online writer's guidelines have been edited to reflect this, but the announcement appeared in the Winter 2008 issue of One Nebraska.

WordHustler.com

I received a note from a friend and fellow IWW member saying, "I was just about to clunk $20 on the new Writer’s Market book, but stopped when I read one of the reviews stating it was out of date. The reviewer wrote, “Recently, I found a site that has good listings (for free. i know. i almost passed out), just like the Writers Market, but helps with the rest of the writer's dilemma- mailing, tracking, etc.(which they do charge for, but inexpensive) It's called WordHustler.com- it's about time someone helped writer's catch up to the Age of Informatioooon!”

My friend concluded her note with "I did check it out and looks good."

Literary Publishing Venue

A long-time IWW member recently had a poem published, and she was sufficiently impressed with the publishing venue that she took time to outline the market possibilities for other writers.

The Funny Times

Tim Bete of the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Newsletter says, "Here's the break you've been waiting for. Ray Lesser, co-publisher and editor of The Funny Times, is looking for submissions. If you haven't heard of The Funny Times, it's a monthly humor publication that's been around for 20 years and has more than 70,000 subscribers.

"Ray recently told me that he's looking for talented writers and cartoonists. He accepts reprints and pays a minimum of $60 for a column or article. The Funny Times has featured many nationally-known humorists, including Dave Barry, Garrison Keillor, Andy Borowitz, Lynda Barry, Matt Groening, and hundreds of others.

"Perhaps the coolest thing about The Funny Times Web site is the new Cartoon Playground, which allows anyone -- even if they can't draw a lick -- to make and publish cartoons."

Writer's Guidelines

The good people at FreelanceWriting.com provide an excellent online resource with their listing of nearly 700 links to publications' writer's guidelines.

One factor making it simple to use is that it groups the publications according to interests or specialties. It certainly made it simpler for me to find a venue to send an essay about killing chickens, which is an esoteric theme for creative writing.
