IWW Members' Publishing Successes

Internet Writing Workshop members continue to find publishing success in all venues. Congratulations to this week's crew!

Judith Quaempts

Barry Basden, editor of Camroc Press Review, has accepted two poems for publication - but will be a while before they show up-CPR is a busy place. I really want to put in a plug for Barry, who made CPR a labor of love. His acceptance of several poems of mine early on was a huge encouragement and I am forever grateful.

Lynne Hinkey

My review of Graveyard Shift is up at Underground Book Reviews, and my interview with the author, Angela Roquet, is also up here.

Guilie Castillo

The full collection of the 2014 A Year In Stories, all twelve volumes, are now available at the Sayville, Long Island library. I've never had any of my work available at a library--I'm over the moon!

Pamelyn Casto

Pamelyn Casto's co-written article on turning anecdotes into flash fiction (which was originally published in Writer's Digest and then re-published in Guide to Writing Fiction Today), is now published anew and is available online.

Patricia Johnson

Eclectica online magazine accepted three of my poems for the October/November issue. Eclectica is a solid, lovely lit mag that has been around quite a while and has a wonderful group of editors.

William Bartlett

My monthly column in the Word from Dad feature, this month entitled "Date Night," is up at KCParent.com. It's also available in print at KC Parent Magazine.

Jacquelynn Rasmenia Massoud

My flash piece, "Whiskey Writer," is up at Literary Orphans.

Thank you so much to fiction for helping me to iron the wrinkles out of this one.

Literary Orphans is a fairly new publication for short fiction & poetry - just under a year old - so, they're not a paying market. However, they've been really pleasant to work with & do some really cool promotional things before the launch of a new issue - promotional artwork & even a video promo.

Wayne Scheer

The Nassau Review has selected my story, "The Love Song of Langley Moran," as the winner of their 2013 Writer's Award. They will publish it in their May issue and send me their prize of $250. That's like real money!

My flash, "Office Routine," is up at Pure Slush.

My story, "Selecting the Right Wine," is up at Eric's Hysterics. It's the only Internet site I know devoted to humorous fiction and poetry, and it now pays $10 for each acceptance. In addition, Eric seems like a nice guy and he pays promptly, the day of publication.

He is also publishing an anthology of humorous stories called Love Hurts. I have a story in the anthology as well.

I was featured on Mona's blog.

Peter Bernhardt

Bob Sanchez features a chat/interview with me on his blog today. Come on over and see what inspires a German to write fiction.

Jeannette de Beauvoir

The first book written under my Alicia Stone pseudonym, Murder Most Academic, is now available online in ebook format and will be available as a paperback as of Friday. Published by Mainly Murder Press.

Thanks go to Messrs Bylina and Sanchez for writing blurbs for it!

Jody Ewing

Author Nelson R. Cabej has used one of my photos for the cover of his new textbook, "Building the Most Complex Structure on Earth: An Epigenetic Narrative of Development and Evolution of Animals." The textbook will be published in April by Elsevier and is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Bob Sanchez

My copy of River Muse: Tales of Lowell & the Merrimack Valley arrived in the mail today. An excerpt from my novel Getting Lucky appears therein, along with over 400 pages of stories by writers with Lowell roots. Among the stories are never-before-seen works by Jack Kerouac. I'm thrilled to be included, though it didn't hurt that one of the editors is my estimable friend David Daniel. The book is available for sale on Amazon.

Fantasy author Steven Vincent kindly interviewed me on his blog.

Joanna Weston

I have three pieces of flash fiction up at Nail Polish Stories. Scroll down a bit and enjoy short reads!

IWW Members' Publishing Successes

It's been another terrific week for Internet Writing Workshop members. Congratulations to all who found publishing success this past week!

Jody

Peter Bernhardt

I am pleased to announce that Rolf and Sylvia's adventuresome spirits have taken them from communist East Germany to Santa Fe. The sequel to The Stasi File -- Kiss of the Shaman's Daughter -- is now available in paperback and on Kindle.

Rick Bylina

My 01/21/2013 blog "MMWUC: The answer is blowing in the wind" was picked up and redistributed by The Daily Life. I like being redistributed. It's the electronic version of the EPA's three Rs: Reduce Reuse Recycle

Guilie Castillo-Oriard

"First in Anyone's Memory," the third installment of my Copycat story, is online at Pure Slush.

The fourth and last section of the Copycat story is also now live at Pure Slush.

Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to read the previous installments, and especially to those who've left such supportive comments on the webpage. It means so much. I look forward to your feedback on this conclusion, and I hope I don't disappoint :)

Patricia L. Johnson

Two of my poems are in the current issue of Southern Women's Review. They are in the special themed section on food.

Mona Leeson Vanek

My guest blog (an updated article about Electronic Publishing that I published years ago on My Little Magazine) was published today at "debi o'neille, writing against the wind."

Edith Parzefall

My translation of Strays of Rio is now available as Die Streuner von Rio at amazon.de, amazon.co.uk. More European online bookstores will follow within the next few days.

Thanks to the IWW's Novels-L list members for helping me beat this thriller into shape.

Behlor Santi

My article on Janet Riley, critiqued here on IWW, is up on the Journal News website.

I want to thank everybody in the NFICTION list who helped me turn this rough draft into a jewel!

Francene Stanley

Jennifer Killby interviewed me on her blog yesterday. I share some of my life history, which some of you might find interesting.

Solstice Publishing also posted a story on their site that I submitted from my blog before Christmas.

Melissa says: I just posted 2 really good blogs. For Readers -- "Real Old Christmas Story" by Francene Stanley. Great story all year long. Stop by and take a look.

Karen Wade McCabe

A while back I won a contest to have The Dragon's Call depicted in a book trailer. You can see the finished product here.

Bill Weldy

I've just been offered a contract to publish my YA novel: THE ONION CAPER, subbed to the list and so aptly critted by many. Were it not for the help received from IWW, none of my work would make it out of the file drawer. Thank you all.

IWW Members' Publishing Successes

As we close out the year, the Internet Writing Workshop extends congratulations to our members who found publishing success this last week.

We wish all our members the very best of success in the coming new year!

Jody

---

Sue Ellis

My review of Thomas Maltman's Little Wolves, a novel I liked very much, is up today at the Internet Review of Books.

I also have two poems up in the new Winter Solstice issue of Mused, the Bella Online Literary Magazine.

Barbara Johnson

My article, "Dishonesty or incompetence in Massachusetts," has been published in PRonlineNews.com.

Edith Parzefall

I've just found out that my thriller Strays of Rio has been nominated for the Preditors & Editors Readers' Poll.

I'm excited. Yahoo! Thanks Santa! :-)

Wayne Scheer

Everyday Fiction has accepted my story, "The Diner," for a future issue. This piece was critiqued in Fiction, so thanks are in order. I like Everyday Fiction because even if they reject a story, they tell you why. And if they accept it, they also tell you why and pay you three bucks.

Eric's Hysterics has upped its pay from $5 to $10, and has accepted two humor pieces of mine, "Selecting the Right Wine" and "A Four-Step Program to a Perfect Tan." "Wine" is scheduled for publication in February and "Perfect Tan" will be up when the weather warms. Also, the editor is publishing an anthology of stories under the title, LOVE HURTS, and my story, "Getting Over Debbie Gilroy," will be in it. As far as I know, Eric's Hysterics is the sole humor-only ezine around, so if you write funny stuff, try it out on Eric. He seems like a good guy.

This day before Christmas 2012, the Internet Writing Workshop congratulates all our members who found publishing success this past week.

May you all have a wonderful holiday season and a new year filled with many more successes!

Jody

Peter Bernhardt

I am announcing the publication of the second edition of The Stasi File.

The second edition features a new cover that changes the background color from white to black--a suggestion from a local advertising professional--that makes the red rose and the title's red letters stand out more. I am having the same professional design the cover for the sequel, Kiss of the Shaman's Daughter, which will be published in January. Other changes for the second edition of Stasi include correction of a misspelled word (horror: replacing pour with pore, as in pore over a document), eliminating a few echoes, and correcting one margin that was off.

The only other revision concerns a Stasi general's title when I discovered that my extensive research for the first edition failed to turn up the fact that after the creation of two Germanys after WWII, East Germany eliminated one of the general ranks and replaced it with another one. While no reader has commented on that, I did not want to let the incorrect title stand, because sooner or later some military buff and/or someone who lived in East Germany during that time would have discovered the particular Stasi general's rank existed in West Germany but not in East Germany. Maybe not every author's nightmare, but certainly something this author did not want to leave uncorrected.

Guilie Castillo-Oriard

It's been a while since I had anything worth Yahooing about, but this one is special. For the first time in over a decade, I get to see my words in actual, physical print. Pure Slush has published Gorge, a novel in stories, and one of them is mine. I don't believe the content is available online, but the above link announces the sale of the book.

I've ordered three copies, and can't wait for delivery.

Mel Jacob

My blog on writing seasonal stories is up at Terry's Place.

My novella, Saving Marta, got a 5-star review on Amazon.

Barbara Johnson

My article, "Microsoft 8: A Horror Story," was published on PR Online on Saturday, December 22.

Paul Pekin

My story "Bread and Butter," is out in the debut issue of Spry Literary Magazine.  Don't neglect the rest of the magazine.  It is a good market, open to new writers.

Wayne Scheer

My story, "Space Cadet," is up at Everyday Fiction.

Kareen Wade McCabe

I was interviewed and featured on the blog, I Am A Reader, Not A Writer.

Jackie Arnett, writing under Sherry Gloag

I've just been told Vidal's Honor has been nominated for Romance of the year! So, I'm hoping/asking for your vote/support. I really would like to get somewhere with this, as Vidal's Honor has become very special to me. It was commissioned, and because I found it hard to get started I ended up with an eight week window in which to get going and have it edited, and submitted. I almost gave up on it at least three times.

Here is the info as it was sent to me, along with the link. Vidal's Honor is near the bottom, so please ask your friends to scroll down the list until they get to Vidal's Honor. Many thanks.

Voting for "Romance of the Year 2012" is open at Deep In the Heart Romance. Be sure to send your readers and fans to this link so they can place their vote. Complete details are listed along with the prize that is up for grabs. Contest ends Dec. 31, 2012.

Jeannette de Beauvoir

Here's my "other" Yahoo, that I can make public now (well, as of yesterday, but I couldn't bring myself to even think about rejoicing in the wake of children getting murdered in Connecticut) ...

Though I still find it difficult to believe, my collection of poetry, Seven Times to Leave, is the winner of the 2013 Mary Ballard Poetry Prize. I don't really consider myself a poet, so I was thrilled to be both a semi-finalist and then a finalist, much less even think of winning. The Casey Shay Press will be publishing the book in mid-March.

Here's what the judge, Fred Marchant, writes about it:

"The poems in Seven Times to Leave bring us into the intimate violence of abusive relationships. Sometimes the violence is physical, the shove or menacing fist or worse. At other times it arises out of sexism and the acted-out belief that a man can exercise power and control over a woman’s life. Then there are the more subtly dangerous ways in which, for any number of reasons, a person might persist in an emotionally damaging relationship, regardless of the cost. Beyond the sheer anatomy of abuse and its consequences, Seven Times to Leave simultaneously presents us with survivors’ tales, stories that teach us the strength of mind and courage of soul that the recovery from such trauma requires. These unflinching, brave poems remind us that above all we must keep alive our capacity to love, or else we die somewhere deep within."

One or two of the poems were critiqued in the poetry workshop a few years back, so thank you to the IWW for that! I'll be donating the royalties to Independence House, an agency on Cape Cod that provides services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Sue Ellis

I'm up today at Fiction 365, with "January to May," and promised ten dollars. Thank you, Fiction, for your help with editing this one.

And Midnight Rising, a Tony Horwitz book I reviewed, is getting a second look at Bob Sanchez's blog, a place I am very happy to be.

Pam Floyd Hauck

My short piece about learning to walk again, titled "Baby Steps," will be included in an e-book anthology on words that inspire.

This was my first experience with responding to a call to submissions on Facebook. It was beneficial to be in a FB group with the editor and read her responses to questions asked about the publication. It was also insightful to see how much work is involved in the submission process.

John Hayes

Autumn 2012 issue of Shelter of Daylight published my poem, "Alien Lover."

Lynne Hinkey

My review of Tom Mahony's latest novel, Pacific Offering, is up at the Internet Review of Books.

Still time to order it before Christmas!

Mona Leeson Vanek

Although I haven't updated "Access The World and Write Your Way to $$$," for more than a year, I continue to get feedback that shows good advice stays relevant. "Let's Sit Down and Talk," (c) 2001 -- Phyllis Cambria, was written by a former IWW member. Today I received the following:

"7-1, Freelance and Security": Thanks for the great post on your blog, it really gives me an insight on this topic.

Anita Saran

As a gift to children (and adults), I've uploaded my 7000 word story "Peter Pan & Anahita," on Smashwords for free. It first appeared in my collection of short stories published by a Delhi publisher. It's had about 40 downloads in 4 days and also made it into one 'library'.

Enjoy it free here.

Wayne Scheer

Another story written with the Practice group has found a home. "A Bad Movie" is up at Clever Magazine."

Clever offers no money, but the editor is a pleasure to work with. She publishes fiction, travel, humor, movie reviews and anything else she likes.

My story, "The Long Drive Home," is up at Fiction365. The editor publishes a story a day and pays $10 a story. "The Long Drive Home" was critiqued in Fiction a while back, so thank yous are in order.

Books! Books! And did I mention Books!?

Internet Writing Workshop members continue to find publishing success in all venues, with this week's list landing in poetry and "nights and weekends" magazines, and (of course) books! A big congratulations to all who've worked so hard for some well deserved successes!

Rasana Atreya

For what it's worth, my novel, Tell A Thousand Lies, hit the #1 in my category on Amazon today, September 23:

#1 in Books > Literature & Fiction > Drama > Eastern

#1 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Drama > Eastern

----

Paul Fein

My feature, "The Escape Artist," has been awarded 8th Place in the Magazine Feature Article category of the 81st Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition. The feature also has appeared in Sports Illustrated magazine in South Africa.

----

Ramona Forrest

I have had 7 books taken by Black Opal Books. The first ones come out this Fall (Stranger on the Tonto, Jake's Song), and some in the Spring.

I wish to express my thanks to the group for the fine editing and all I have learned.

Thanks a big bunch!

Mel Jacob

Busy month. I finished my Christmas story and am awaiting word from the publisher. Also:

When Lilacs Bloom by Nell DuVall (etopia Press) is out in both print and ebook.

"The Corpulent Chiropteran" (short story, Melange Books) will be out soon in ebook and we've got a killer cover for it. I'm struggling to post the various covers on my website.

The Train to Yesterday (etopia Press) is out in ebook.

"Teaching Man" (2nd short story) in Touched by Darkness ebook Anthology (etopia Press) will be in print in October.

----

Ellen Kombiyil

I'm thrilled that my poem "Letter to the Gods of the L&D Ward" appears in the current issue of Poemeleon.

A huge thank you to everyone on Poetry-w who critiqued this poem and helped me to shape it into the poem I wanted it to be.

----

Tom Mahony

My short story "Manifesto" is up at Nights and Weekends.

----

Edith Parzefall

My social thriller, Strays of Rio, has been released on the International Day of Peace, an honor and a responsibility. Can the cycle of violence be broken? There is a glimmer of hope.

Big thanks to the members of Novels-L, who helped me polish this baby.

Also, Holly Michael recently hosted me on her blog as I paid tribute to all the great people who took care of and watched out for me and my companion as we traveled in Brazil.

Jeannette de Beauvoir

Just realized that a novel I ghostwrote became available back in March (better late than never, I expect!) -- if anyone's interested, it's called Her Hero's Salvation (I didn't pick the title) by Ruby Chevalier (I didn't pick the name) and is a ... gasp! ... romance novel.

Yeah, let's face it, I'm a word slut. Pay me to write and I'll write it. Yahoo, anyway.

Mira Desai

I’m delighted to announce publication of a short story, "Brittle," in Them Pretentious Basterds, a smart, cool magazine out of Chennai. The artwork is amazing.
(See page 45)

The great Mughal Emperor, Jehangir, is believed to have said about Kashmir, “If there is Paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this.” My very modest attempt to salute this enchantment, “These Secrets of Spring” is published in The Valley Scribe. (page 8, 9,10)

A poem, “May Morn in Mumbai", is on page 10.

Thanks, Kathy, for this opportunity.

Lynne Hinkey

Marina Melee is in the Summer Reading List competition at Underground Book Reviews. Winners will be decided by reader votes, so please go to Underground Book Reviews and vote (early and often) for MM!

Thanks to all the critters who helped me quickly; The River Journal has my Q. A. e-mail interview live online. Trish Gannon, editor/publisher wrote: "I'll let you know when they're delivered to Montana. They're at the printer now and I'm guessing will be ready for me to pick up early next week. I don't charge for the magazine. Anyone local can pick them up at a variety of places... most gas stations in north Idaho. In Montana... Bull River station, Big Sky pantry in Noxon, Gas station in trout creek, gas station in Thompson... I'll also let you know when all is online on the website.

Plus there's this: http://issuu.com/trishgannon/docs/may2012_riverjournal

Click the magazine to read, and arrow (right) page 6, "The Montana Scribbler ...... " Her introduction brought tears to my eyes and filled my heart to overflowing. It's the nicest compliment any publisher has written in regards to my Montana regional history series.

Kareen W. McCabe

I was just interviewed on Novel Reads.

Susan S. Miller

The first poem I've submitted since 2010, "Comin' Up Short," will be read before the guest interview on Accents - A Radio Show for Literature, Art and Culture on WRFL, 88.1 FM (Lexington, KY) on Friday, May 4; the show airs from 2-3 PM EDT.  You can listen to the podcast in the archive of shows (where you will find interviews with Nikky Finney and Charles Simic, among others, that might be of interest).

The host of Accents Radio is also the senior editor of Accents Publishing which is holding a chapbook contest with a deadline of June 30 - open to any poet writing in English.

Elaine Moore

My first novel, The Rest of Forever, which was critiqued in Novels-L is now available on Kindle. Thanks to Rhonda Gill for her advice, and to Ben Shipley for all his patience and formatting help. Without him, I'd still be sitting here ripping out my hair.

Edith Parzefall and Francene Stanley

While we mothers slept, our first baby was born.

Canada-based Double Dragon Publishing released the first book in the Higher Ground series, Wind Over Troubled Waters, on April 24th, during the night in Europe.

Francene Stanley lives in England, Edith Parzefall in Germany. Edith woke with cramps around two in the morning, Francene naturally an hour later.

Currently the book is on sale with a 20% discount on amazon.com, just in case you'd like to get a souvenier after all the hard work you invested in helping us make the series shine! :-)

In case you've been wondering why I hardly had time to crit or even thank people for their crits of my current wip, check out my guest blog at Deb O'Neille's.

Loretta Carrico-Russell

My latest book review is up on Internet Review of Books, The Bigamist's Daughter.

Wayne Scheer

I'll be leaving for a week in NY without my computer--call it a trial separation--but I got this going away present this morning.

My story, "What the Moon Sees," will be published in Everyday Fiction later this month.

Jack Shakely

I hope you enjoy my latest op-ed in the Los Angeles Times.

Pat St. Pierre

Ars Medica, the medical-literary journal from Mt. Sinai, accepted my poem, “Yoga Lesson,” for publication this spring. They accept pieces about healing and disease, their guidelines help

Jacqueline Rasmenia Massoud

My story, “Snapshots of Weakness” was accepted at iction365 and is online today: http://www.fiction365.com.php5-12.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com/?m=20120221&cat=1
Big thanks to everyone in the Fiction list who helped me work out the kinks in this one. Fiction365 pays $10 U.S. for a story. That's about 7 & half Euros for me - enough for a bottle of wine. Two or three bottles if I get hobo wine. (I am not too fancy for hobo wine.)

Barb Johnson

Editor of the Scarsdale (NY) Inquirer just sought permission to excerpt from my memoir, “Why I Didn't Sleep with Mitt Romney & Other Tales.” http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006VZIMIK on Kindle. Paperback coming in a few weeks

Holly Michael

My novel, “Crooked Lines,” which I submitted to the Amazon ABNA contest made it into the first round. Thanks to those who helped me with the pitch. And thanks to Edith Parzefall, who took a lot of time to get it ready for submission. It's a small step, but hopefully one that will lead to the next step.

**And this from Peter Bernhardt who didn’t Yahoo but joins Holly and three others in making the first cut:

“Looks like five IWW members made the first cut, 3 in general fiction and 2 in YA fiction. Keeping fingers crossed for us all.”

My poem, "Gotta Go," is up at Foliate Oak Literary Magazine (March issue). A number of works by IWW members, from photos to fiction, can be found there, so I'm in good company. (http://www.foliateoak.uamont.edu/)

Bill Weldy

My novel “Outlaws,” which so many of you assisted with your valuable crits, is slated to be released on Amazon and Musa Publishing site on April 27th. Now for the dreaded marketing. Thank you all.

~~~
Wayne Scheer
My story, "The Dance of the Long-Time Married," is up at Fiction365.
Thanks to all at Fiction for their critiques.
I also have a flash, "Old Habits," up at Loch Raven Review.
~~~

Sue Ellis

“Cats and Casanovas” is up today at Stanley and the Whale, part of the editor's Valentine's Week collection.

The editor presents one story each day, after which they're nudged down the page, finally disappearing after five days or so. He likes the unusual, a lot like Weird Year. The stories he likes best go into a printed book at the end of the quarter. I haven't heard yet whether or not C & C made the cut. Thanks to Fiction for the comments and suggestions on this one.

~~~
Jody Ewing
On February 14, the Daily Gate City -- which covers the Iowa, Illinois and Missouri tri-state region -- published an article about cold case victim Delores (Toni Martinez) Hornung, quoting a large amount of information from my recent Iowa Cold Cases blog post, "Somebody Knows Something." I was quite pleased with their story and how they folded in the details.
~~~

Jackie Arnett (writing as Sherry Gloag)

“From Now Until Forever” is #1 in Fiction Books in Amazon and was available free from Astraea Press on Feb. 15.

~~~
Mark Kline
Finished an unusual translation recently. It's on a wall at the national museum of art in Copenhagen, which is a place I never imagined anything I ever had anything to do with would be. I had to translate the poem so each line and the poem as a whole took up almost the same number of words, characters, spaces, to give a mirror effect on the wall, the original and translation side by side. The poem was written for an exhibition of the Danish painter, Hammershoi. It probably doesn't make sense without seeing the exhibition and his paintings, but here it is, on their website.
~~~

Francene Stanley

I've just signed the contract with Solstice Publishing for “Still Rock Water.” Much kudos goes to Edith Parzefall, my writing partner of another series of books, which will be published by Double Dragon Publishing in May. I must have sent a query to at least one hundred agents and publishers over the last years. After each rejection, which never gave any reason so I could change the dross, I edited, edited, edited. I've reached the stage where I enjoy editing more than writing. It's a wonderful opportunity to improve. A publishing deal. Yahoo!

"Fleeting Memories," recently reviewed in Fiction, has been bought by Fiction 365 for a cool ten bucks.

Loch Raven Review has accepted my flash, "Old Habits."

"The Affair" is up at Infective Ink.

My flash, "The Long Road," reviewed in a recent Practice round, is up at Diddle Dog.

Lynne Hinkley

My interview with Victoria Valentine is now up at Away with Words.

I'm thrilled to be in the company of Ann Hite, whose interview appeared on the blog in December. Victoria, and her publication, Skyline Literary Magazine, were instrumental in getting me started on this journey by giving me my first fiction publishing credit, for "The Visit" - a story that started as a practice piece at IWW!!

~~~
Peter Bernhardt
Thanks to Debi's generous offer, I managed to land an article on her blog today. Come check it out and leave a comment if you are so inclined.
Jeannette de Beauvoir
I was happy to hear this morning that Mainly Murder Press will be publishing a new mystery series featuring Trinity Pierce, a college professor with a mysterious past, who lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first book in the series will be out next year. Doing the happy dance, even if it's a year away!
IWW Members' Publishing Successes
I'm honored to introduce to our readers and Internet Writing Workshop members your new blog-mistress, Judith Quaempts, who will now collect and report the IWW's weekly publishing successes. You'll find her first batch below, which I'm pleased to publish for her while she fine tunes her browser and prepares for the week ahead.
Judith is a longtime IWW member and currently serves as co-administrator for our Novels-L list. She lives in rural eastern Oregon where open space abounds. She has a cat with severe halitosis which keeps the neighbors from dropping in too often. When she isn't writing, she reads, walks, bikes, and gardens.
Please join me in giving Judith a warm welcome and wishing her the very best in her new IWW endeavor.
Additionally, we offer congratulations to this week's members who found publishing success in a wide range of venues! Keep up the great work!
Beth Camp
Just wanted to say thank you and YAHOO! for a short story, "The Namesake Quilt" started in response to an IWW PRACTICE prompt ("lost and found") a few months back.
The story got picked up for the Country Register's Feb/March 2012 issue, now out in newsletter format in Washington, Eastern Oregon, and Southern Idaho. This crafting newsletter is a wonderful resource for quilters.
You can read the story on my blog.
I'm proud to present below our latest batch of Internet Writing Workshop members who found publishing success this past week. Congratulations to all of you!
Jody
Mark Budman
My story "Anniversary" is up at One Forty Fiction. 140-characters. Twitter size.
Thank you, Bill Backstrom, for the market tip.
~~~

Rick Bylina

Every wonder what makes Rick tick? How the book sales are really going? How many decades it took to write his first novel? Check out the interview up on the Indie Writing blogWorking hard to make the Chatham County Best-Sellers list. I mean, really, how many books can be coming out of Chatham County in a year. I have to be in the top 100 by now. Can't I be? Maybe? Confidence ebbs, opossum in yard shakes head in disgust as he eats more of Rick's bird seed in front of Rick.

Sherry Gloag

I have a guest blog up at Murders and Mysteries.

The editor of the River Journal plans to announce my online editions of "Behind These Mountains," vol. 1, 2 & 3. Trish Gannon, the editor wrote, "...Mona I had no idea you had put the books online - what a wonderful resource! I'll have to put something in the River Journal about it. You should also upload your files via Amazon's create space or something like it, so that those who might want a hard copy of the book can buy one. (Like me - I wish I knew who I had loaned my books to, so I could get them back.)

Yes! I replied with a press release, and then sent PR to a few MT newspapers, and to Libby, MT. School Supt. I need to find time to do promotion.

Michael Baird

My story "Grave Voices"  will be on Fiction365 tomorrow. Thanks to the fiction list.

~~~
Barry Basden
Prick of the Spindle has accepted "Benny Goodman Once Played Moonglow Just for Her" for their next quarterly online issue. They do lots of good things there.
Thanks to all who helped make this piece better.
Fwriction's Year One anthology includes "We Continue to Evolve." Happy to be there with some of my favorite writers.
Thanks to everyone who helped make my little prose poem better.
~~~

Rick Bylina

No, [a yahoo] not with a bunch of balloons tied to my house, even though I've been accused of a lot of hot air on occasion, but I'm up on The Muriel Reeves Mysteries with an interview. Ypsilanti for me.

Check it out. Membership in Mystery Writers of America paying off.

The good news on Friday the 13th continues...

Oxford Hunt Book Club has selected A Matter of Faith for their February read and has asked me to attend the roasting, er, discussion of the book. There's another 10-16 sales. I can eat at "IHOP"! Gotta find out how they heard about the book.

~~~
Guilie Castillo
My short story, "Piano Sonata in C Major, K 545," is now online at Pure Slush.
This story started as a Practice exercise a few months ago, so a great round of applause, please, for all the Practice members that helped shape it into something publishable.
~~~

Jeannette de Beauvoir

My flash fiction piece went up today at Dew on the Kudzu, just in time for my birthday! Yahoo indeed.

~~~
Mira Desai
I'm delighted to announce that Flashes in the Dark has published my rather nasty flash, "DARK."
Thanks to the practice group, and to Wayne in particular, for suggesting this site.
~~~

Sue Ellis

A reprint of my essay, "A Bucket of Dirt Clods," is up at Front Porch Review.

Thanks to those on the fiction list who helped me with this one.

~~~
Sherry Gloag
Zizzling Hot Books gave From Now Until Forever a great review.
~~~

Lynne Hinkey

A review of Marina Melee is up at Underground Books!

I was also interviewed by Underground Book Reviews; it's now up at their site, along with their review of Marina Melee!

~~~
Ann Hite
When I first began writing seriously, I dreamed of being noticed by Chapel Hill. That dream came true this week. They reviewed Ghost On Black Mountain and placed it in their North Carolina reference collection. I’m snoopy dancing. This is almost as exciting as being a finalist for the Townsend Prize and being nominated for Best First Novel by a Georgia Author.
~~~

Mel Jacob

Contract has yet to come, but I have a pub date for When Lilacs Bloom, a time-travel romance. It's May 4, 2012, so I'll have two the same month (two different publishers).

My short "Deadly Valentine" is to be released Jan 27. They accepted it some time ago, but said they would hold it so I didn't think were going to issue it soon. It's only about 2K so I don't know what to expect, but it will be up before Valentine's Day. I found out when I got the copyedits today. :)

~~~
Barbara Johnson
Just uploaded Why I Didn't Sleep with Mitt Romney on Amazon, which said it'll be online in 12 hours. If you have a Kindle app, you can get it from the Lending Library.
~~~

Mona Leeson-Vanek

Yahoo! Much of the credit goes to IWW NFiction critters for the kudo I received this morning, regarding "Northwest MedStar: Eastern Washington's Affordable Vital Link in a Medical Emergency."

Northwest MedStar's Marketing & Communications Strategist, Jerrie Heyamoto, wrote:

"Thanks for the nice story. I've sent it on so everyone can take a look." See www.inhs.org.

~~~
Tom Mahony
My flash, "Three Waves," is up at Front Porch Review.
My third novel, Pacific Offering, will be published by Casperian Books, with a release date likely in 2013. Click here for a brief synopsis of the book.
~~~

Judith Quaempts

Dreadful Little Press has accepted a flash piece, "The Nature of Love (and Other Disorders)" for a future issue.  Funny thing is I submitted this last November and forgot all about it so quite surprised when I got the word yesterday.

Thanks to the fiction list for tweaking it.

~~~
Bob Sanchez
Today I offered my noir mystery Getting Lucky for free and then tweeted my brains out all day long. The result is 1436 downloads in one day. Amazon ranked it #244 in free ebooks and #5 in hard-boiled mysteries.
Apparently, "free" is good. Little Mountain is free this weekend, and 1845 people have downloaded it since yesterday. Ranked 25th in mystery & thriller!
~~~

Wayne Scheer

My story, "The Transition," is up at Eunoia Review.

My flash, "Turning Thirteen" is up at Long Story Short.

Both of these stories began in Practice, so thanks for the inspiration and the helpful comments.

Atlantean Publishers, out of Essex, UK, has accepted my story, "You  Can Never Be Too Careful," for their print publication, Monomyth Magazine.  I subbed the story March, 2009.  My reward will be a free contributors' copy.

It's the ones you least expect that please you the most.  A while back I entered a strange contest at On the Premise.  They asked for a story of less than thirty words using the same phonetic sound (alliteration) as much as possible.  I won second place and ten dollars.  If you're curious, here's what I came up with.

My story, "Bringing Mama Home," is up at Muscadine Lines.

My story, "Late Night Heroics," is up at Everyday Fiction.

My story, "Three Generations," has been reprinted by The Corner Club Press.  It is in Issue 6, beginning on page 45.

My story, "A Jazz Tune-Up," written for Practice a long while back, is up at Pure Slush, their music themed issue.

My story, "Mysterious Ways," is up at Dead Mule.  This story was written for a Practice exercise a few years ago.  It took quite a few rewrites to land it a home.

This url will take you to my "southern legitimacy" statement. I think it captures my "Southernness."  From there, you can click on my story if  you so desire.

My non-fiction piece, "Off the Road," has been accepted by Cobalt Review for their March issue.

~~~
Jack Shakely
Yahoo. I have just been informed by Bedford/St. Martin Press that my op-ed piece on Indian mascots that appeared in the August 25, 2011, Los Angeles Times will be included in the college textbook "Everything's an Argument With Readings." The initial press run will be 200,000, which is 199,200 more than my first novel.
And I say to myself "It's a Wonderful World."
~~~

Pat St. Pierre

My photo "Red Velvet" is in the January issue of Front Porch Review under Visual arts.

I am posted as a "Weekly Artist" at www.weeklyartist.com.

~~~
Bob White
Yesterday our local library held a 'Meet the Author' day for local writers. I was invited to bring my mystery novel, Abducted (Critted here last year by the Novels group). The results: (1) They've placed it in the library for loan; (2) I've been invited back for a solo book signing this spring; (3) The library's mystery book club has selected it to be the next novel they read; (4) I sold every copy I had with me for sale.
What a great day.
My little piece, "Alpine Snow," was selected by Nailpolish Stories as one of their Best of 2011.
Those OPI colors do make great prompts.
~~~

Guilie Castillo

I think I forgot to crow about this one… A chapter from my novel, Restoring Experience, is published in the first issue of Lady Ink, a new magazine in the US.

You may purchase either print or PDF copies at this link.

This is the first time in something like twenty years that my work appears in print--yep, I'm psyched. Unfortunately this chapter has not made it past the Novels-L list yet, so any quirks and funky language is completely my own responsibility :D

~~~
Jeannette de Beauvoir
My flash fiction piece "Empty Houses" will appear on my birthday, January 16th, in Dew On The Kudzu.
Nice one to come in just under the wire in 2011!
Sue Ellis
IWW Members' Publishing Successes
As the year winds down, many Internet Writing Workshop members continue to wind up enthusiasm for writing and finding publishing success.
We lead our final 2011 list with Rosana Atreya's announcement; she stayed the course for five years, and her shortlisted book (up for the Tibor Jones South Asia Prize for unpublished manuscripts) exemplifies purpose and perseverance.
Ann Hite and Mel Jacob also made major announcements and have much to celebrate, so be sure to read through to the end and discover what promises to be a very Happy New Year for them and other IWW members.
Congratulations to all for some well deserved publishing successes!
Jody
------------------
Rasana Atreya
My book, Tell A Thousand Lies, has been shortlisted for the Tibor Jones South Asia Prize for unpublished manuscripts.
Needless to say, Fiction group on IWW gets a big thank you (with specific mentions of Holly Michael, Carol Kean, Yael Politis, Regina Zeller Wingate, Vrinda Baliga, Silvia Villalobos).
And let's not forget all the wonderful people in Practice-W who put up with my pathetic first attempts, gently steering me to better writing: Albert Ervine, Alice Folkart, Mira Desai, Kathy Highcove, Wayne Scheer, Carol Hicks. Please forgive me if I've left out names.
~~~

Bill Backstrom

My very short story, "Midnight Crossing," was the Dec. 15 selection for OneFortyFiction.

~~~
Barry Basden
"Hawaiian Reservations," started as just another little nailpolish story. Then it got really long, with a new title. It was snapped up a few hours after submission to Airplane Reading.
Instant gratification.
~~~

Jan Bridgeford-Smith

My short story, "Grace's Good Intentions," was published in the inaugural edition of Lady Ink Magazine. The work of several IWW members can be found in this first issue!

The PDF version is a modest price and the publication is filled with interesting stories, poems, and art that "...seeks to promote an egalitarian view of women...and non-cliched treatments of the female form."

~~~
Mark Budman
A great review of Sudden Flash Youth: 65 Short-Short Stories. I am a co-editor.
~~~

Guilie Castillo

The link to my story, "Mischievous Moonlight," is now live on Fiction365.

Heartfelt gratitude to Wayne for this; after his Yahoo yesterday, I submitted a piece to Pure Slush and it's been accepted.

The piece is "Piano Sonata in C Major, K 545," which started as an exercise for Practice. Thank you so much to everyone that helped to make it stronger and publishable.

~~~
Jeannette de Beauvoir
My play about Harriet Quimby and Amelia Earhart was just published in the first issue of Lady Ink.
~~~

Ann Hite

I received the best of news late yesterday afternoon. The second book in the Black Mountain series will be published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. And I even get a slightly higher advance and an exciting promotional plan this time around ;). Those of us in the publishing industry know this is not a small accomplishment with the hard times the book business is going through at the moment. I'm very excited and see this as a wonderful Christmas gift. More exciting news to come about promotion for both Ghost and new book but this by far is thrilling. Ghost has only been out three months! We're on a roll.

Thank you for all your support and belief in me. I don't know what I'd do without you.

Also, Ghost On Black Mountain is one of the ten finalists for The Townsend Prize for Best Fiction. This is a prize given away every two years. My publisher is thrilled, but not as thrilled as me ;). Just being a finalist is a dream come true and gives me a place in Southern Fiction.

~~~
Mel Jacob
Just got the offer for a mystery to be published in July 2012. That means I'll have two novels coming out in 2012.
~~~

Jacquelynn Rasmenia Massoud

My story, "Muddy Promise" has been published by Every Day Fiction and is now online.

It may be worth mentioning that Every Day Fiction does pay $3 U.S. for a story. This can buy me two espressos from the cafĂ© up the road. So, $3 = a moment of happiness.

~~~
Pauline Micciche
My story, "The White Shoes," came in second in the public voting phase of the Columbus Creative Cooperative's "Shoes" Flash Fiction Contest. Unfortunately it did not win one of the prizes in the final phase conducted by Columbus Creative Cooperative judges.
~~~

Sarah Morgan

I haven't been writing much of late, but I'm pleased as punch to see my little "Rubber Boot Koan" appears in Four and Twenty's December 2011 issue. Click here for the pdf version and scroll down through the poems. Mine is number 19.

I've found the turnaround from submission to acceptance (or not) is quite quick. It's a fun place and the editors are great to work with.

~~~
Bob Sanchez
Holly Jahangiri did a great job interviewing me at her blog, The Next Goal.
I'd love it if you'd stop by and leave a comment.
Five Amazon reviews in December--two for When Pigs Fly and three for Little Mountain.
I'm tickled!
~~~

Wayne Scheer

My story, "Early Morning Reverie," is up at Pure Slush.

Fiction365 bought my story, "The Dance of the Long-Time Marrieds." It's set for publication in about a month and a half. They pay $10 for fiction ranging from flash to full-length stories.

Pure Slush accepted my flash, "A Jazz Tune-Up" for their January 18 issue. Each month is devoted to a theme. January's theme is music. They are still accepting stories for January.

Two small victories.

An old flash from Practice, "There's Always Hope," is up at Airplane Reading. Barry Basden is right about how this is a good site if you need instant gratification. I sent them the story last night. It was accepted and up on their site in the morning. They're looking for stories involving airplane travel.

My poem, "Keeping the Earth in Orbit," has been accepted at Long Story Short for a future issue.

Flash Fiction Offensive puts the offensive in Christmas stories. The editor has been putting up Christmas Grit for a while now and my flash, "Home for the Holidays," was published December 26. It's the place to go if you need an antidote for holiday sweets.

I have a "Bouquet of Shorts" up at Apollo's Lyre. FYI: I've notified the editor about two errors that need correcting.

~~~
Pat St. Pierre
My poem "The Green Shuttered Cape" was one of the 10 honorable mentions in the 14th Mattia International Poetry Contest (a Canadian contest). I have won honorable mentions there several times.
Just received an email from Silver Boomer Books that published "The Harsh and the Heart" military poems/stories (a poem of mine) in print; it will be an ebook on Amazon's Kindle.
So I guess that's more exposure of my work.
~~~

Joanna M. Weston

I'm so pleased that my poem, "Rain," is up at the Camel Saloon.

A poem, "The Gardener," is up at Mused Online, the current issue, 9th from the bottom!

Two stories up at Nailpolish Stories. I just had to try these, thanks to Barry.

Happy New Year.

G.K. Adams

My personal essay, "Hurricane Ike's Unexpected Fruit," has been accepted by Texas Gardener. Thanks to all on the nonfiction list who commented. I couldn't've done it without you!

~~~
Rick Bylina
Okay, a bit of a Christmas present to pubbed writers on IWW--publicity, a bit of shameless self-promotion--naturally, and another long interview up on the web this morning--finally.
Listed the 2011 pubbed books that I know of from IWW writers along with some other friends of mine on my blog this morning. My Monday blog entry usually has over 100 hits so hopefully it's more exposure for you. If I missed you, add yours in comments or through an email to me. I can edit the blog entry.
The author interview, done two months ago, finally showed up on Book Bags and Cat Naps. I actually meet two out of three criteria the web owner cited for self-pubbed best-seller success. Guess which two?
~~~

Barbara Johnson

Published: "The Internet Writing Workshop" with review of The Stasi File by Peter Bernhardt.

~~~
Tom Mahony
Here's a review of my novel, Flooding Granite, at Paddling Life Magazine.
~~~

Guilie Castillo Oriard

My story "Mischievous Moonlight," critiqued in Fiction, will be published on Fiction 365 this Friday, Dec. 16th.

~~~
Wayne Scheer
In an attempt to get into the holiday spirit, One Forty Fiction has published my story in less than one hundred and forty characters, "The Christmas Spirit."
The Foliate Oak Literary Magazine has accepted my flash, "Stop Saluting Seahorses, Ernest," for their January issue.
~~~

Pat St. Pierre

Two of my poems were accepted by Long Story Short Poetry.

One will be published in January. Will send link when published.

I have a photo up at The Camel Saloon (poem will follow).

IWW Members' Publishing Successes

This has been an especially good week for Internet Writing Workshop members, particularly for writing partners Francene Stanley and Edith Parzefall. They -- along with many other list members -- are a true testament to rewards reaped from dedication and perseverance.

We begin this week's list of publishing successes with Francene and Edith's announcement.

Congratulations to this week's crew!

Jody

~~~
Francene Stanley and Edith Parzefall (submitted by Francene)
Over the last year or so, Edith and I have submitted our four-volume novels of the Higher Ground series about a future world after the great flood destroyed the world as we know it.
We've just signed our contracts with Double Dragon Publishing for the first book, Wind Over Troubled Waters, and they are interested in the three further books as well. We're pretty confident they'll be published. Of course, we'll have to wait over a year before the book appears in all its glory as an ebook and paperback.
I can't tell you how excited I am. Years of dedication and perseverance have paid off. I spend seven hours a day at my computer and love every second. If it hadn't been for the Internet Writers Workshop, Edith and I would not have met and this partnership would not have formed. Not only that, but I give credit to the generous, skilled people at Novels-L for honing my writing over the years. Edith is the best partner anyone could have, as I'm sure anyone knows who has been lucky enough to receive a critique from her.
~~~

Jan Bridgeford-Smith

Kathy Highcove, editor of the Valley Scribe newsletter, included my short story, "Minty's Gourd," in the December issue, page 13. It's online now. I subbed a version of the story on the Practice list and as usual, got helpful comments that strengthened the final tale.

Thanks, Kathy, for your constant support of IWW members.

Additionally, my piece "Garden Bounty" is now live at 6 Tales.

Six stories, online for one month...it's a neat site...do hope you'll take a look.

Thanks to all the Practice List folks that read this as a sub and commented; your crits always guide my revisions and final product...thank you.

~~~
Mira Desai
After a monsoon of rejects, I'm glad to announce publication of a story, "Ebony has many shades," in an online anthology, In Her Place.
~~~

Sue Ellis

From January, almost a year ago, my story "A Bucket of Dirt Clods" appeared in Poor Mojo's Almanac(k).

Thanks to everyone in Fiction who commented on this story when it was submitted.

~~~
Dawn Goldsmith
I've been getting several assignments to write profiles of fabric artists. One just sent me a thank you for what I wrote. She said:
"Thank you so much for your eloquence in conveying what I do. I seriously have cried twice today just thinking of it. I can't wait to see more of your writing in upcoming issues!"
That was almost as valuable payment as the check. :) It feels good to get positive feedback.
~~~

Mel Jacob

~~~
Adrienne Ross
I am pleased to say that my flash essay "Pasayten Wilderness" is posted at the web anthology In Her Place: Stories About Women Who Get Around.
If you read it, please consider leaving comments.
~~~

Bob Sanchez

I have a guest post over at Diane Wolfe's Spunk on a Stick and would love it if you'd stop by and say hello. The discussion there is low-cost promotions.

I have a blog appearance at Make Mine Mystery, where the topic is "Learning from the Pros." Please stop by and leave a comment.

~~~
Wayne Scheer
"Kim's Picture," written recently for Practice, has been accepted at Apollo's Lyre for their March issue.
